What are Moles?
Moles or nevi are dark or at times skin-colored, flat or raised areas of different sizes that can present at birth or later in life. As a general rule, moles should not change their symmetry, color, size, or their depth (minor size changes can be seen at times such as during childhood or puberty). Any noticeable changes should warrant an evaluation by your healthcare provider. Your dermatologist can decide if further evaluation such as biopsy (sampling) or removing it is required. This is to make sure that they are benign and not something worrisome like melanoma which is a deadly skin cancer.
What are Some Treatment Options for Moles?
Concerning moles are removed and biopsied (sampled) to make sure they are normal and not cancerous such as a melanoma. There are various techniques to assess moles and your dermatologist will advice you on the best method to assess any of your moles.
Moles are also commonly removed for cosmetic purposes if one does not like their appearance.
